What does Addiction Science have to do with Scripture?

Most Addiction Therapists consider religion the antithesis of science. This is a misconception. Coping with Christ is utilizing direct healthy behavior instead of displaced behavior.

In my opinion, addiction science is just now catching up on what Scripture says  about addictive behavior.

People don’t become addicted to objects or things, they become addicted to relationships and the rewards they acquire through those relationships.

Christ Driven Behavior is all about the values of Jesus Christ. The first step everyone should take when they need to find out who they are, is to look at their values, because living according to your values is what makes you happiest in life. If you start pulling away from your values, that is when you become really unhappy and discontent. Your values are the starting place for all your beliefs, actions and behaviors.

Your values may have become obscured during your drinking or drugging or whatever your habit or hangup. In fact one of the reasons why you became so unhappy during that time is probably because you were living in a way that really didn't correspond with your values or how you wanted to live. Unless you value being helpless, trapped, lacking control, frustrated and sad, then I guess you were not living according to your values at all.  It is important that you get to your true values, because following them and living them is the very foundation of what will make you happy in life.

Here is how Addiction Science functions with respect to Behavior:

All addictions are symptoms of something else that is wrong in our lives. (All hurts, habits and hangups are symptoms).

Using drugs as an example: All chemical abuse is for a reason. We always get some reward out of our actions.

Addictions are nothing more than displaced or substitute compulsive behaviors or actions intended to give the person control over a helpless situation in life. Compulsive habits are never random, they are always preceded by an emotional issue considered very important to the individual. These circumstance are always preceded with feeling of overwhelming helplessness, feeling trapped and out of control.

Instead of a healthy normal (direct) action that conveys control over our issues, chemical abusers exploit the quick fix or mood changer of drugs (displaced) actions. For example: We find ourselves overwhelmed with financial matters that appear out of our control. We feel trapped. We escape the trap, we take control, by getting drunk! It's all about control. The addict feels that even temporary control is better than none at all.

Addictions are all about dealing with emotional issues that are very important to us and how we regain control of those issues. We always act to regain control in some manner.

The question is: Do we escape from the trapped helpless feeling by taking control of our behavior with drugs (displaced) or do we utilize healthy (direct) behavior? The choice is always up to our free will- our thinking.

Here is how Scripture parallels secular Addiction  Therapy:

* Don’t let your emotions govern your life, your," helpless, trapped," situations.  Proverbs 29:11
* Change your
thinking, allow your cerebral cortex to trump your limbic system. Romans 12:2; become Reborn 2 Corinthians 5:17
* Surrender or "Intellectually Delegate," Control to God 2 Corinthians 12-9
* God returns the control to us through the Holy Spirit, a HelperJohn 14:16; Philippians 2:13
* You will regain self control, be empowered and exhibit the direct healthy  virtues, values and behavior fruits of  copying with Christ, or Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) Galatians 5:22

When you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you replace the rewards of displaced behaviors or addictions with the rewards of Christ Driven Behavior (CDB). Simply stated, your decisions honor God. When you give God control that control will be returned to you with the fruits of the spirit including self-control. We develop new values, motivation, purpose and character. Recognize your weakness, your tendency to do wrong, Reframe the pros and cons-of your reward system that motivates your behavior and Replace the negative rewards with new Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) or rewards.

Christ Driven Behavior empowers us to regain control of our lives by following the values and principles of our personal psychotherapist (psyche-soul), Jesus Christ.  This relationship brings copying skills, values, motivation and purpose to our lives. This is the marriage of Science and Scripture. Change your thinking and change your life.

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
