Understanding and Choosing Better Coping Skills
You can change your mood without drugs.
Posted Sep 16, 2016

"When it comes to better understanding and treating addiction, we can learn a lot by looking at a person’s coping mechanisms. Conventional wisdom tells us that a certain number of negative experiences are just part of life. Things don’t always turn out like we hope they will; we are sometimes disappointed in ourselves and others. The question is not if you will go through hardship at one time or another in your life, but rather, how you will handle it."

The author is correct, hardship is inevitable and how we handle it is key. God knows this and says, "Come to me all those who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Mathew 11:28).  Copying starts with defining and understanding our emotions. Chemical abuse is defined as a behavior used to regain control over an emotional state! The truth is, all addictions serve an emotional purpose.

Here is how it works. When specific circumstances in our life cause us to feel overwhelmed, helpless, powerless, trapped and out of control, chemical abusers regain control with  quick fix or mood changer of drugs or alcohol. Chemical abusers escape the helplessness trap with chemicals because it empowers them to control/change, how they feel! That's right, an alcoholic, actually regains control (of his feelings) by getting drunk!
This is a Displaced copying behavior, a temporary quick fix or mood changer,  but it does work and hence, the  reward is compulsively repeated.
However, there is a better way to regain control of our feelings. When we have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ we find ourselves behaving with Direct Christ Driven Behavior (CDB). CDB empowers us with values and motivation, that help us regain control over our emotions our helpless feelings.

How does this work? CDB works through Intelligent Delegation and Reciprocal Innervation. If we choose to Delegate or Surrender our lives to Christ (2 Cor. 12:9-10) we become empowered because, "God's grace is sufficient for us for there is power in weakness." God returns that power to us (Reciprocates) with the Holy Spirit, a Helper that will be with us always. (John 14:16). When we delegate control to God, God does reciprocate with the fruits of the Holy Spirit which include, "Self Control." (Galatians 5:22-23). Giving control to God is empowering! We still have free will and control but now we are empowered with new thinking! We are no longer conformed to corrupted thinking ( Romans 12:2). We no longer vent all our emotions but can keep them under control (Proverbs 29:11).

So what happens here is we develop new coping skills?  We regain control of helpless circumstance of life with empowered Direct healthy behavior (CDB) and not Displaced corrupted behavior. This concept is behavioral science and scripture at work. All addiction experts recognize that what changes people are values, motivation and purpose. This is exactly what transpires when we intellectually delegate or surrender our lives to God. Surrender is a simple yes or no choice. Surrender is a process where we decide to love God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength. Surrender is to be willing to give God 100%, simply our best. The Bible is a book on Behavior Therapy!  Read it to be holy, read it to be wise, read it to regain control of your life and your healthy.
The best coping behavior comes from the capacity to see things from God's perspective and to behave according to scriptural principles.

Change your thinking and allow God to change your life-for the better.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
