"In my book, Breaking Addiction: A 7-Step Handbook for Ending Any Addiction, after describing the stories of people with addictions and discussing what each story tells us about the addictive process, I wrote a chapter called "Test Yourself".  That chapter has further stories of people with addictions but, unlike earlier in the book, I left out my explanations of what was going on, instead asking readers to see if they could answer the major questions about the case for themselves.  For each case, I posed 4 questions:"

What are the underlying emotional themes that lead to the experience of helplessness and, in turn, its addictive solution?
What defenses does this person use that keep him or her from seeing the key moment?
What is the key moment on this person’s path to addiction?
What more direct alternative actions could he or she have taken in place of the addictive act?

The brilliance of doctor Dodes is in his simplicity. All addictions serve an emotional purpose. The treatment is mastering those emotions with direct healthy behaviors instead of displaced quick fixes or mood changers of drugs or alcohol. Christ Driven Behavior (CDB), that honors God, is a direct healthy behavior.

Emotions are the primary drivers of our behavior. All addictions, serve an emotional purpose. Addictions are not just substance abuses (drugs, alcohol), but also behaviors. You can’t get addicted to a substance or behavior that doesn’t do something for you. In humans, the common denominator behind any compulsive behavior is the desire for a, “quick fix or mood changer,” for how we feel, the need to feel better. Addictive behavior is learned, there is always a reason and a reward.

The purpose of any addiction is to regain control over intolerably helpless-trapped-powerless feelings, an emotional state. This helplessness is always rooted in something deeply important to the individual.

We always have a binary choice. We can regain control of helpless feelings with displaced substitute behaviors (quick fixes or mood changers of drugs or other behaviors), or direct healthy behaviors that empower us.  What humans really seek is a sense of control.  What we really seek is not a drink, a drug, porn or a bet, but a sense of empowerment, in the face of feeling helpless.

The best antidote for any hurt, habit or hangup: Is when you choose a high value, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, when you replace the rewards of displaced behaviors or addictions with the rewards of direct Christ Driven Behavior (CDB). Christ Driven Behavior (CDB), is a direct empowering behavior that honors God, a direct way to regain control over helpless, trapped, powerless feelings! When we delegate control to God, He empowers us with a seminal mentor that imparts motivation, conviction, purpose and the fruits of the Holy Spirit called valuesSelf-control is one of those fruits or values! When we act with direct healthy behavior and not with displaced-indirect behaviors, we exercise self-control. When we learn to act with assertive healthy Christ Driven Behavior there is no addiction!

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
