Substituting Addictions aka Cross Addictions

"Many people will substitute one addiction for another during or after the recovery process from their original addiction. Are these people destined to become addicts for life, battling a never-ending cycle of recovery and relapse?
It is commonly believed that once you’ve had one addiction, you’re at greater risk of developing another. The concept of an “addictive personality” has been around for decades—and, it might shore up the “once an addict, always an addict” ideology of 12-step programs. Indeed, many people will substitute one addiction for another during or after the recovery process from their original addiction. Are these people destined to become addicts for life, so to speak, battling a never-ending cycle of recovery and relapse?
Whether addiction will be treated as a syndrome instead of a particular disorder in the future, many agree that getting to the core of what drives your addictive tendencies is key to lasting recovery."

So true, getting to the core of what drives your addictive tendencies is key to lasting recovery." In my view, all core drives begin with feelings of helplessness and lacking control. How we regain that control determines are compulsive behaviors or lack of them. Likewise finding the motivation to change your thinking is essential and replace displaced quick fix-mood changing behavior for healthy direct behavior. If and when you find the right Higher Power as your motivation, direct healthy behavior is inevitable.

All Hurts, habits and hangups that result in compulsive behaviors are symptoms of something else that is wrong in our lives.
The cause is always precipitated by circumstances that render us feeling helpless, trapped, overwhelmed and out of control.
The treatment is always a choice. We have a choice to regain control with substitute displaced behavior (addictions) or healthy direct behavior.

With healthy Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) we regain control of our behavior and lives with purpose driven motivation based on the values and principles of Jesus Christ.  Change your thinking and change your life. Eat well, move well and think well.

1. Don’t let your emotions govern your life. Proverbs 29:11
2. Change your thinking Romans 12:2; Reborn 2 Corinthians 5:17
3. Surrender or Delegate Control for there is power in weakness 2 Corinthians 12-9
3. God returns the control to use through the Holy Spirit John 14:16; Philippians 2:13
4. Exhibit the virtues and behavior of Christ Driven Behavior Galatians 5:22

Addiction Switching: A Personal Account

By Robin Bright Jul 9 2015

"Remember Whack-a-Mole at Chuck E. Cheese? It’s the game where you use a rubber mallet to hit the little mole every time he pops up from his hole. Unfortunately, there are about 9 moles and just as many holes. The game progressively gets more difficult until there are four or five popping up simultaneously.

That’s what my recovery looked like."

"The root problem in addiction switching is not the substance or activity itself, but the underlying problem the behavior points to. Even if the focus is on something viewed as harmless or positive, there is a fine line between healthy and obsessive behavior. Substituting one activity or substance for another reveals that hidden compulsive patterns are still occurring in our lives. Engaging in these behaviors will often have negative consequences of some shape or form down the road."

We all have experienced adversity, disappointment and pain. We have all developed coping mechanisms that at the time, helped us to deal with the issue. Sometimes we have continued using corrupted coping mechanisms that no longer help us, and may actually harm us.  Simply put, we need a God-intervention; we need Christ driven behavior, values, motivation and purpose. We need Someone more powerful than ourselves to break our cycle and heal us from the inside out.  That Higher Power is Jesus Christ.

All hurts, habits and hangups can result in Displaced Behaviors. What Christ teaches us is Direct Behavior, based on the values and tenets of Scripture.

A Displaced Behavior is substitute behavior, always an emotional response to circumstances that cause us to feel overwhelmed, helpless, trapped, powerless and lacking control (Proverbs 29:11). Often, we attempt to regain control of our helpless, trapped feelings with compulsive Displaced Behavior! (Drinking, anger, drugs, sex, porn, codependence, etc.). Virtually every compulsive act is preceded by a feeling of helplessness or powerlessness. Addictive behavior functions to repair this underlying feeling of helplessness. It is able to do this because taking the addictive action (or even deciding to take this action) creates a sense of being empowered, of regaining control—over one’s emotional experience and one’s life.

We can choose Direct Healthy Behavior when we give God control; when we decide to surrender control to Christ. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). Simply stated, we regain control (John 14:16) with empowered behavior that,"Honors Christ." We conduct our lives with Christ Driven Behaviors (CDB) when get our values and purpose, from the Bible. (Galatians 5:22-23). When we change our thinking (repent) we can let God change our life. (Romans 12:2)This isn't rocket science, this is the marriage of science and scripture.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
