Risky Internet Use: At What Point Should Parents Worry?

A New Scale Can Help Parents Set Limits

The Eternal Battle Over the "Net"

"It’s a rare parent these days who does not worry at times about just how much time their son or daughter spends on the Internet. While a few brave souls might opt to eliminate the problem by eliminating the “net” altogether from their family’s life, the overwhelming majority of those I know can attest to the ongoing tug of war over “how much is too much”? when it comes to time spent gaming, texting, You-Tubing, and so on. What To Do?

Rather than arguing from a perspective of personal opinion, parents can use the PRIUSS as a point of departure for not just a one-time discussion but an ongoing dialogue about their child’s Internet use. That dialogue will be a rational one, based on concrete, observable behaviors.  Though the battle will no doubt continue, at least we parents now have some "objective truth"on our side. As such it can help us in  setting limits we feel more objectively confident about."

To take the PRIUSS the individual responds to each question on a scale of 0 (Never) to 4 (Very Often). Here is a sampling of the questions:

  • Do you choose to socialize online instead of in person?
Do you fail to create real-life relationships because of the Internet?
Do you skip out on social events to spend time online?
Do you feel irritated when you’re not able to use the Internet?
Do you put Internet use in front of important, everyday activities?
Do you lose motivation to do other things that need to get done because of the Internet?
Do you lose sleep due to nighttime Internet use?
Does time on the Internet negatively affect your school performance?

God has rules for our journey through life, too. They’re called the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3–17). Each bears truth and wisdom designed by the Creator to guide and protect you and your children from harm.

The Ten Commandments And God spoke all these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery."

Profundities can all be made simple:

The Ten Commandments should be our internal masters. The greatest problem with this world does not from the outside, not from external enemies but from within. Social justice comes from within. Our thinking determines our behavior. God gave us a way to think. God made it pithy and simple.

1) Worship no other gods than the Lord.

2) Do not make idols for yourselves.

3) Do not misuse the name of the Lord.

4) Observe the Sabbath as a holy day.

5) Honor your father and mother.

6) Do not murder.

7) Do not commit adultery.

8) Do not steal. (Shapes all the other commandments. Steal a life, honoring parents, reputation etc)!

9) Do not give false testimony against your neighbor.

10) Do not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

"I am a Surrendered Believer in Jesus Christ with Free Will and I CHOSE Surrender (Intelligent Delegation) in my victory over, “Recreational Chemical Abuse, my weekend, "False Idols."
"I chose DIRECT health assertive Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) instead of DISPLACED behavior in order to regain control over feeling helpless, powerless, trapped and lacking control. I changed my, "Thinking," and God changed my life."

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
