Porn Comes of Age

Further evidence that it acts like drug addiction

Published on July 31, 2014 by Alexandra Katehakis, MFT, CST, CSAT in Sex, Lies & Trauma

"A recent study from University of Cambridge reports that porn may trigger compulsion in the brain of a sex addict much the way drugs and related paraphernalia triggers a drug addict. In a process called "incentive motivation," a now widely accepted theory of addiction, the drug addict is driven to consume narcotics not for pleasure, but to satisfy an uncontrollable feeling of desire. By correlating sex addiction with drug addiction, researchers have put to bed the long-standing argument that heavy use of porn is merely a sign of a "high sex drive." Far from it, says Dr. Valerie Voon, the study's main author. "There is no question [these people] are suffering," she explains. "They are unable to control their behaviors." Additionally, a recent German study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry reported that as greater amounts of porn were consumed, the brain registered lower levels of “reward” in the striatum, causing “desensitization,” or simply put, numbness. More and more pornography was thus needed to return to the original high, echoing the drug addiction comparison made by Voon. Together, these studies mark a significant breakthrough for those who believe sex addiction had lagged behind other disorders in terms of public understanding, treatment options, and research funding."

Correlation and stimulation of neurochemicals does not equal causation. The author is in effect attempting to confirm that porn and drugs are responsible for uncontrolled behaviors because of anatomical and physiological findings. This is the seductive appeal of mindless neuroscience. The flickering lights of functional MRI's and augmented peptides are useful but not complete in the etiology of addictive disease concepts.
The evidence shows that addictions are behavioral in origin.
Example: Vietnam Vet Study (Lee Robins-government study): Study of heroin addicts: 45% used, 20% admitted addiction, only 5% relapsed after return to states. Results: Self cured!  Vets were no longer exposed to the stress of war and they decided to change!  (Robins found, to the surprise of many, that just six months after coming home, over 90 percent of the veterans had quit using heroin. Soldiers used heroin because they were at war, with all its unthinkable horrors. Heroin helped them to deal with this external reality; once that reality evaporated, they no longer needed the drug. But the stateside addicts used heroin for completely different reasons— because it served an emotional purpose for them).
Example: Smoking: Surgeon General Warning in 1964: 40% of smokers quit and 90% on their own cold turkey!
Example: Drinking: William Miller and his colleagues at the University of New Mexico tracked subjects following outpatient treatment for their drinking problems. The researchers found two primary factors predicted the likelihood of relapse— “lack of coping skills and belief in the disease model of alcoholism.”
There are dozens more evidenced based studies. (Why the public does not hear about them is another subject).

The universal finding with any addictive act is the person chooses a substitute or Displaced behavior for a Direct behavior. Substitute or displaced thinking is the Quick Fix or Mood Changer for stress. All addictions are symptoms of something else that is wrong. Virtually all causes of addiction start with an emotional component. Certain circumstances in life cause people to feel overwhelmed, helpless trapped. When they choose a substitute behavior such as porn or drugs they regain control and escape the trapped feeling! When they choose a Direct assertive healthy Christ Driven Behavior they escape the trap and regain control through Christ Jesus. Jesus of Nazareth, taught this over 2014 years ago.

Empower yourself: Change your thinking and change your life.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
