On Staying Sober Without Religion

“I'm sober because of me, because I finally decided to take control of my life and do what I knew was right—quit drinking. I've had help along the way from friends and therapists, but in the end it came down to me.”

In the end, it always comes down to you. That is why God gave us free will. People change when they hurt enough and have to or learn enough and want to. People change when they are motivated to change, when their values trump their addiction.
Can and atheist overcome hurts, habits and hangups? Absolutely when they understand an learn to manage their emotions.

When circumstances in life cause us to feel overwhelmed and helpless, feeling trapped, powerless and out of control, we have two options to regain control:
Direct Behavior or Displaced (substitute) Behavior.
A simple example would be when you are faced with an overwhelming bill that makes you feel helpless, trapped, powerless and lacking control because you don't have the money to pay it!
A displaced behavior would be getting drunk to regain control of how you feel. Yes, getting drunk does temporarily relieve those negative feelings and in so doing, helps for the moment to regain control of your feelings.
A direct behavior would be working out a payment plan. Both behaviors are methods of regaining control over helpless feelings.

From a secular, behavioral perspective, ADDICTION IS A DISPLACED EFFORT TO REGAIN CONTROL OVER AN EMOTIONAL STATE.

Addiction is a substitute or displaced behavior used to regain control of intolerably helpless feelings of being trapped, powerless and out of control.
True psychological addiction (versus simple physical dependence and withdrawal) is neither more nor less than an emotional solution to manage feelings of intolerable helplessness. When people feel utterly trapped they have to do something, and if they feel they can't act directly to get out of that trap, then they have to do something else. The "something else" is, therefore, a substitute action (technically called a "displacement"). When people repetitively perform a displaced action to try to manage overwhelming helplessness, we call this driven, compulsive behavior an addiction. For example, a chemical abuser is overwhelmed with anxiety and chooses a displaced quick fix or mood changer of alcohol. The abuser actually regains control of how he feels with the alcohol, he temporarily feels better! Addiction always serves an emotional feeling purpose. Chemical abusers regain control of how they feel with drugs. Porn, gambling, anger, any habit or hangup, all have the same root cause.
When compulsive abusers understand this concept they can take responsibility for their lives and regain control with direct healthy behaviors that work for them in order to regain control of overwhelming emotional circumstances.

So who needs a higher power such as God?
The answer is anyone who wants a template for direct healthy behavior that comes with a bonus you won't get anywhere else - eternal life. When you have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, you have a built in mentor the Holy Spirit that reciprocates with new thinking, values, purpose and motivation. Self control is one of those important values, a fruit of the Holy Spirit!

Life on earth is all about, stress, emotions and "Control," or lack of it. The bottom line with, Anxiety/Fear or any hurt, habit or hangup, is simply that when we are in that moment, we feel emotionally helpless, trapped, powerless and out of control. We have a choice to make in order to reverse that control:
1. Displaced behavior: We can attempt to gain control over the situation with displaced action such as anger, running away, controlling others, drinking, drugs, porn you name it. (compulsive-addictive behavior is a specious attempt to gain control).
2. Direct Behavior or Christ Driven Behavior (CDB): We can give control to God. When we surrender our lives to God, this is a decision. A decision that is simply, "Intelligent Delegation." Romans 12:2: Let God control our thinking and He will return that control to you in the form of the Holy Spirit (Reciprocal Facilitation). When we regain control of our situation, issue, or life, by giving God control (2 Corinthians 12:9-10), we will find the grace and power to emulate the values, character and purpose of Christ, not the least of which is self control. Galatians 5:22-23.

This is behavioral therapy at its best. This is science and scripture at work.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
