"The truth is that most people do get better – as many as 75% get better without official treatment (see here and here for some research). "

All change ultimately occurs because of decisions (THINKING) people make for themselves. People change when  they are HURT enough and HAVE to, or when the LEARN enough and WANT to.
People overcome addiction out of purpose-based motivation -- they quit when they recognize how their habit violates WHO they were, WHAT they want to be, WHERE they want to go in life.
A person's purpose and values are the main navigational tools in recovery from any hurt, habit or hang-up.
The Bible is not the only place to find purpose and values but If we get our purpose and values from the Bible (the best source), direct healthy behavior is inevitable.

Consider why you drink? Do you drink to regain control over an emotional state? In other words drink to regain control over circumstances in life that make you feel overwhelmed, helpless, trapped, powerless and out of control?
Compulsively getting high on any substance or certain activities (porn, gambling, etc.) is done to regain control over helpless feeling which is another way of saying, that compulsive abusers get high to regain control of how they feel. The chemical abuser is an expert at the quick fix or mood changer with their drug of choice.

Q: Why do people drink and drug or abuse chemicals?

A: The answer is simple but not obvious. To change the way they FEEL; to regain control over helpless circumstances very important to the individual. We don’t have a disease over which we have no control. We have emotions that we don’t understand and hence can't manage. Addictions are behaviors used to reverse feeling of helplessness. Addictions always serve an emotional purpose. Addictive behavior is always preceded by feelings of helplessness, feeling trapped, feeling powerless, feeling out of control.

Drinking is a temporary (displaced substitute) quick fix or mood changer that actually helps the abuser regain control over their helpless feelings!

People may not be able to change their circumstances, but they can change how they think about them (HP of Holy Spirit) and therefore change how they feel and behave.  When you have a genuine personal relationship with JC, you change your thinking, and God changes your life.

The best way to overcome any hurt habit or hangup is introduce yourself to the character of God thru a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  If you intelligently delegate control of your life (surrender) to God (2 Cor. 12:9), you will behave with self-control (Gal. 5:22-23), with Christ like thinking  and direct healthy behavior that honors God ( Romans 12:2).

The antidote for any hurt, habit or hangup: Is when you choose to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, when you replace the rewards of displaced behaviors or addictions with the rewards of direct Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) that honors God. When you give God control that control will be returned to you with the fruits of the spirit including self-control. We develop new transformed thinking, new values, motivation, purpose and character. Christ is a great motivational mentor if you let Him; if you are willing to intellectually delegate control to a more qualified entity. Jesus Christ has been teaching behavior therapy for more  than 2000 years with 66 books written by proxy. Through prayer and scripture we Recognize our emotional weakness, our helpless situations, we Reframe the pros and cons of our  behavior and Replace the cons with new CDB behavior.

Change your thinking and let God change your life with direct healthy assertive behavior and not displaced behaviors.

"I am a Grateful Believer in Jesus Christ with Free Will and I CHOSE Surrender (Intelligent Delegation) in my victory over, “Recreational Chemical Abuse, my weekend, "False Idols."
"I chose DIRECT health assertive Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) instead of DISPLACED behavior in order to regain control over feeling helpless, powerless, trapped and lacking control. I changed my, "Thinking," and God changed my life."

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
