Make Fear and Anxiety Your Friends, Not Your Enemies

Never serve anxiety or fear, always make them serve you

Published on May 18, 2014 by Billi Gordon, Ph.D. in Obesely Speaking

"Compulsive overeating, like alcoholism and all of the other “isms” are collateral consequences of stress regulation.  A lion share of the problems lies with the brain’s inability to process anxiety differently from fear. Understanding the difference between fear and anxiety is important because it helps promote better emotional control, habit management, and healthier, happier relationships and lives."

None of us are exactly the same with respect to how we perceive stress (fear, anxiety, etc.).

Indeed, reality can often be in the perception of the event. (when driving down a dirt road some may see a boulder crashing toward them and others see a tumbleweed in the wind).

For the last 100 years, the medical model for disease is: Organ--Defect--Symptoms.

Addiction has been defined as, "A Stress induced DEFECT in the midbrain's ability to properly perceive pleasure."

Stress is relative and contingent on the fact that our human perception differs in than no person has the exact same: severity, patterns, coping mechanism, or exact same brain.

The way we act to stress starts in the midbrain at emotional levels. Fortunately, unlike lab rats we have Free Will and a frontal cortex that analyzes data and emotions and makes decisions. As the title of the above article states, we can make fear and anxiety our friend if we choose to do so.

Life on earth is all about stress, emotions, "Control," or lack of it. The bottom line with, Anxiety/Fear or any hurt, habit or hangup, is simply that when we are in that moment, we feel emotionally helpless, trapped, powerless and out of control. We have a choice to make in order to reverse that control:

1. Displaced behavior: We can attempt to gain control over the situation with displaced action such as anger, running away, controlling others, drinking, drugs, porn you name it. (compulsive-addictive behavior is a specious attempt to gain control).

2. Direct Behavior or Christ Driven Behavior (CDB): We can give control to God. When we surrender of lives to God, this is a decision. A decision that is simply, "Intelligent Delegation."  Romans 12:2: Let God control our thinking and He will return that control to you in the form of the Holy Spirit (Reciprocal Facilitation). When we regain control of our situation, issue, or life,  by giving God control (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),  we will find the grace and power to emulate the values, character and purpose

of Jesus Christ. It doesn't get any simpler or better. Change your thinking and change your life! Celebrate Christ is all  about discovering the root cause of your issues, understanding your emotions, surrendering control to God and changing your thinking. In other words understanding your symptoms (behavior/addiction) from the INSIDE-OUT.  Addictions are symptoms, not incurable diseases that hijack are brains. Addictions are displaced behaviors intended to reverse feelings of profound helplessness and lack of control.

Your circumstances may be out of your control, but God is in control of everything. Your thoughts shape who you are, but you can change the way you think. Intelligent Delegation and Reciprocal Facilitation are the neurological pillars of a stable Christian life.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
