Looking to the Past for Answers to Modern Medical Problems

The key to some cases of chronic pain lies in wisdom from an earlier day.

Ovid: When the mind is ill at ease, the body is affected. (Vitiant artus aegrae contagia mentis.)

Sir William Osler: If you listen carefully to the patient, they will tell you the diagnosis."We expect that more medical care will lead to better health and well-being. Yet, there are disorders for which modern medicine has failed. And these conditions are among the most commonly encountered in medical practice. These disorders typically affect younger people, rather than the elderly (although they are also common among seniors) and consist of five primary areas: chronic pain, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety and depression. In fact, the majority of visits to doctor’s office are for these disorders."

Modern medicine fails many people with chronic pain and other conditions for which there is no simple technological fix. Many doctors now understand that taking the time to listen carefully to the whole story can make all the difference.

I have come to realize that all pain has a psychological component that is much overlooked. People go to a doctor because they can't control their pain. What people really want,  but often don't articulate, is a better life and that involves the absence of pain. Dealing with stress, psychological, physical and emotional is critical to healing. Teaching a patient how to control their lives, (taking control of emotional circumstances in life that render them trapped, helpless, overwhelmed and out of control), often results in a reduction of their somatic pain. All hurts, habits and hangups are symptoms of something else that is wrong in our lives. Regaining control with direct healthy behavior and habits (Christ Driven Behavior) is hard work but results in regaining control of their pain and more importantly their life!  The key to some cases of chronic pain lies in God's wisdom. Eat well, move well, think well. Start with the renewing of your mind Roman's 12:2

Can Back Pain Be Contagious? At Times, the Answer Is "Yes."

Back pain is not always due to an injury to the back, especially chronic pain.

"We understand that you can catch a cold from someone who sneezes near you or a child who comes home from school with a runny nose or sore throat.  How much are we influenced by our social situation?  Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler and have analyzed data demonstrating that obesity, smoking and happiness are more likely when we are exposed to others with these disorders.  Although there is debate about how powerful these factors are, the concept makes intuitive sense.  There is a great deal of evidence showing that many of our actions are strongly influenced by factors of which we are not aware, i.e., the subconscious mind."

Four Questions can Help Determine the Cause of Chronic Pain

"Millions of people suffer with chronic pain and other disorders for which physicians haven't been able to define a clear medical problem or effective treatment. Few patients or doctors are aware that neural pathways can be the cause for their chronic symptoms, as opposed to tissue damage conditions. This distinction is critical and these questions will help sort this out."

1. Is there a clearly defined medical disorder that explains the symptom?
2.  Is there a history of other psychophysiological disorders?
3.  Is there a history of significant stressful events, particularly early in life?
4.  Were there significant life events occurring at the onset of the symptom(s)?

When you think about it, why does any person go to a doctor (teacher). It is because they have lost control, they feel trapped and powerless to remove their pain/problem.  Pain often serves an emotional purpose. Our job in the health field should be to return that control to them so that they can live a better life, mentally, physically emotionally and spiritually. Think well, move well, eat well.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
