It’s Not Rocket Science

"Along about Wednesday or Thursday, new clients will lean back, sigh and say something like, “It really isn’t rocket science, is it?”

At which point we will smile, comfortingly we hope, and reply, “No, it’s just good science.”

It’s interesting that when all of the “everyone knows” mythology is cleared away, an exercise in deprogramming that most people quickly understand, solving alcohol abuse problems is fairly straightforward. That’s not to suggest that it’s easy. It will involve some short-term discomfort, some effort, learning some new skills and coping mechanism, and a willingness to leave a few old habits, associations, and, yes, people behind.

Deprogramming and exorcising myths means replacing AA and rehab twaddle with reality: AA and “facilitated 12 Step” (the business of selling AA as treatment) “work” less than 10% of the time, mostly less than 5% since this is the percentage of people who find relief through AA.

Then there’s the “it’s the only way.” Seriously? People have been abusing alcohol, and recovering, for thousands of years. Then, as now, most people recover without meetings, Steps, or commercial rehab.

But beyond dispelling the bunkum, which clears the air but doesn’t fix your own problems, how do you, like millions of others, leave the alcohol abuse behind?

That first requires replacing some of your own beliefs and self-image fallacies with comforting realities: alcohol abuse is not a disease, it’s a symptom; you don’t abuse alcohol because you are dumb or diseased but because it worked, until it didn’t. You aren’t an “alcoholic” or powerless unless you say you are, in which case you do belong down at AA.

The symptom approach lets you look at what you are self-medicating. Typically this is loneliness, boredom, anxiety, depression, unbalanced relationships and/or lives; personal grief, tragedy, physical pain, aging, role loss, and any number of other “issues.”

Yes, alcohol does provide temporary relief from any or all of these. No wonder it’s so popular and even less wonder we move from using it to “fix” one problem to generalizing it to many more. That’s where the trouble lies.

Eventually, we are medicating too much and addressing too little and this swirl turns into a downward spiral of which we seem to have lost control.

Alcohol abuse always serves an emotional purpose. Discovering and managing your emotions is the key to recovery. Using your thinking neocortex instead of your primitive emotion driven limbic system. It's not rocket science, it's science and scripture.

The common core element in any compulsive hurt, habit or hangup, is the emotional feeling of being trapped, overwhelmed, or helpless. When these feelings become intolerable and overwhelming we feel loss of power and control. An alcoholic will attempt to regain control, escape the trap with a quick fix or mood changer. There are other choices, other behaviors,  to regain control. This is God’s message to all of us. Understand and manage our emotions and delegate control to God, who will reciprocate and empower us with the Holy Spirit and in turn change our thinking and change our behavior, with the fruits or values of the Holy Spirit - not the least of which is self control.

Recognize: the key emotional moment of the overwhelming helpless circumstance, the underlying emotional theme present, that will lead to feeling trapped and helpless. Reframe: What are the problems associated with displaced behavior? What are the benefits from stopping? What are the pros and cons of regaining control with a temporary quick fixes or mood changer versus regaining control with direct healthy behavior?  Replace your attempts to regain control of circumstances with displaced behaviors and instead, use direct behaviors that empower yourself. What more direct alternative actions can you take in place of the addictive act, in order to regain control? Replace your old behavior with Christ Driven Behavior. Always ask: Will my behavior honor God? When your actions are Christ like in character, you have regained control. There is no addiction, there is peace.

Most addiction experts perceive that Science and Scripture are antithetical; this is a misconception. We need scientific explanation to understand nature. We need meaning to understand human behavior. We need God to give us the answers to both. Jesus Christ taught His personal psychotherapy, over 2000 years ago. He authored by proxy, 66 books on behavioral principles! Read the Bible to be wise, believe it to be saved and practice it to be holy and healthy.

"I am a Surrendered Believer in Jesus Christ with Free Will and I CHOSE Surrender (Intelligent Delegation) in my victory over, “Recreational Chemical Abuse, my weekend, "False Idols."
"I chose DIRECT health assertive Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) instead of DISPLACED behavior in order to regain control over feeling helpless, powerless, trapped and lacking control. I changed my, "Thinking," and God changed my life."

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
