"Drinking and drugging affects every aspect of an addict’s life. In my experience, my work life took a huge hit. Often, I was just too sick to go into work. There was just no way I could manage my job while hungover, needing to get a fix, or unable to get out of bed. Other times, I needed to go out and look for drugs just to make it through the day and feel OK."

Every work day is full of adversity for me. Some circumstances are more overwhelming than others. When I feel trapped, powerless and helpless, I use to drink and take drugs. I could wait until the weekends to do this because just the knowledge that I was going to get wasted on the weekend (hey I deserved it, so I thought) empowered me to escape the trap of adversity. You could say I regained control of my feelings with getting drunk or taking drugs.

I've since learned there are more healthy high value behaviors to use, in order to regain control. The trick is to find those empowering behaviors, that we value. If we don't have them we need to find them! For example, in the next 30 minutes I'm about to go on a 23 mile bike ride :-) What all humans really seek is a sense of control. What we really seek is not a drink, a drug, porn or a bet, but a sense of empowerment, in the face of feeling helpless and powerless. Exactly how we empower ourselves and regain control of our feelings, our life, is what needs to be first understood and then managed.

The main navigational tools in life are values and purpose. People overcome hurts, habits and hang-ups out of purpose-based motivation (based on values) -- they better themselves when they recognize how their habits, violate who they were, what they want to be, where they want to go in life.

All addictions, serve an emotional purpose. Addictions are not just substance abuses (drugs, alcohol), but also behaviors. You can’t get addicted to a substance or behavior that doesn’t do something for you. In humans, the common denominator behind any compulsive behavior is the desire for a, “quick fix or mood changer,” for how we feel, the need to feel better. Addictive behavior is learned, there is always a reason and a reward.

The purpose of any addiction is to regain control over intolerably helpless-trapped-powerless feelings, an emotional state. This helplessness is always rooted in something deeply important to the individual.

We always have a binary choice. We can regain control of helpless feelings with displaced substitute behaviors (quick fixes or mood changers of drugs or other behaviors), or direct healthy behaviors that empower us.  What humans really seek is a sense of control.  What we really seek is not a drink, a drug, porn or a bet, but a sense of empowerment, in the face of feeling helpless.

The antidote for any hurt, habit or hangup: Is when you choose to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, when you replace the rewards of displaced behaviors or addictions with the rewards of direct Christ Driven Behavior (CDB). Christ Driven Behavior (CDB), is a direct empowering behavior that honors God, a direct way to regain control over helpless, trapped, powerless feelings! When we delegate control to God, He empowers us with a seminal mentor that imparts motivation, conviction, purpose and the fruits of the Holy Spirit called valuesSelf-control is one of those fruits or values! When we act with direct healthy behavior and not with displaced-indirect behaviors, we exercise self-control. When we learn to act with assertive healthy Christ Driven Behavior there is no addiction!

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
