Hidden Moralizing About Addiction

Don't put up with being insulted.

"People moralize about addiction all the time. But some forms of moralizing are more subtle, and just as harmful. They say that folks suffering with addictions are weak, selfish, pleasure-seeking, stupid and on and on. This kind of nonsense is easy to spot. But some moralizing is more subtle. Here are two examples of hidden moralizing that I've gathered from comments made in response to our book "The Sober Truth," which examines the flawed science behind 12-step treatment.

1. "If you aren't doing well in 12-step programs, it's because you haven't worked at it hard enough. You haven't followed the suggestions. You haven't done the steps. ""It works if you work it." However, the slogan is completely untrue, as we showed in our book (12-step programs have a 5-10% success rate, which cannot be attributed to the idea that 90% don't work hard). Saying that people who don't benefit because they're not working hard enough is unconscionable.

2. A corollary myth is: "If you haven't walked the walk then you can't criticize." When this is said of people who are critical of 12-step programs, it is a version of the notion that if you don't have the problem yourself, then you can neither understand it nor treat it (a foolish and dangerous idea in itself; imagine seeking treatment for depression only from people who are depressed). Celebrate Christ Recovery will never insult you. We are all made in the image and likeness of God. However, Celebrate Christ Recovery is not for everyone. Celebrate Christ is dedicated to the idea that a person's purpose and values are the main navigational tools in recovery. The Bible is the book that contains this template for purpose and values. If you are a perfect human being, devoid of all problems, without any of life's hurts, habits or hangups, you don't need Celebrate Recovery because you are deceased. However, if you are still living on planet earth and want a reborn contentment and knowledge, if there are things in your life you want to change, you don’t change them from the outside in. You change them from the inside out. You start with your thought life, not by trying to change external things. If you have a faulty worldview, with your thinking askew, it’s going to cause all kinds of unnecessary problems in your life. Perfection is not required, but progress is possible, when you allow Christ to change your thinking.

Celebrate Christ Recovery is a balanced, biblical program that helps to address hurts, habits and other life controlling problems.

Celebrate Christ Recovery, is the Celebration of the values of Jesus Christ. It is a form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy or Christian Behavior Therapy that utilizes Biblical principles and mores, specifically employing the 8 Beatitudes, which are statements on life's values. You deal with hurts, habits or hang-ups from a biblical philosophical perspective, with emphasis on socially and morally appropriate behavior as taught by Jesus Christ in the pages of the Bible. Change your thinking, change your life.

Like other recovery programs, Celebrate Christ Recovery isn’t for those who need it, but for those who want it. All change ultimately occurs because of decisions (THINKING) people make for themselves. People only change when they hurt enough and have to or when they learn enough and want to! This recovery program is forward-looking. Rather than wallowing in the past, or dredging up and rehearsing painful memories over and over, Celebrate Christ Recovery focuses on the future. Celebrate Christ Recovery isn’t just about alcoholics, addicts, and those who love them, but also about the hurts, habits and hang-ups that affect us all.

Easily create a Forum Website with Website Toolbox.

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
