Hearing God in the Midst of Suicidal Thoughts

"No one ever suspected. I worked hard to have a polished smile and on-cue laugh. But several times during my teen years I contemplated taking my own life. Had someone asked me why I was thinking about suicide, I would never be able to rationally explain my reasoning. It's hard to admit that I thought life was so hard that I wanted to end it—especially considering how easy my life has been in comparison with people suffering all over the world. It's also hard to describe the experience of depression. It's like trying to describe living in a room that is pitch black."

Depression can be likened to the neuroendocrine system gone wild. Depression is when our negative emotions trump our positive thinking. Human thought is influenced by an electro-chemical cacophony of serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and endorphins.

Clinical depression should always be attended by a qualified Physician. Sometimes a chemical tweak is necessary to promote more clear thinking, much like a detoxing drug addict might need a prescription to calm their withdrawal symptoms. Always seek professional help.

All hurts, habits and hangups serve an emotional purpose. Depression serves an emotional purpose.

Negative thinking can be used as an attempt to regain control over overwhelming feelings, the helpless, trapped, out of control emotions that never seem to end. Deceptively and paradoxically, depressing thoughts can actually empower a person giving them back, some measure of control,  over helpless feelings much like getting drunk serves as a temporary quick fix or mood changer for helpless feelings. With depression and chemical abuse, the user is doing something about how they feel and this actually makes them feel better, even if only for the moment. The depressed person might think negatively, even to the point of suicide. The chemical abuser takes drugs. Both of these substitute behaviors are called Displaced Behaviors. Both of these behaviors are designed to regain control over helpless  feelings. There is another type of behavior that can be used to regain control over overwhelming helpless feelings. It is called Direct Behavior, which is a healthy assertive behavior.

Socrates said the unexamined life is a life not worth living. Examine your life now. Scripture offers a direct healthy antidote. Give God control. The best way to overcome any hurt habit or hangup is introduce yourself to the character of God thru a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.  If you intellectually delegate control of your life (surrender) to God (2 Cor. 12:9), you will behave with self-control (Gal. 5:22-23), with Christ like thinking  and direct healthy behavior that honors God ( Romans 12:2).  This is God's promise, "I will send you a Helper and He will be with you always." John 14:16.
Life is a struggle. It was meant to be. "Come to me those who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest." (Math. 11:28).
Life was never designed to be easy, fair and without pain (the core of addictive thinking). We may be powerless over our tendency to think, feel and act wrong, but we are not powerless to choose. You can choose God or you can choose displaced thinking, you can't do both at the same time.

This is something to think about. Combine your free will with God's will. God has a purpose for you: To think like his son Jesus Christ.

Give God a chance. Let God change your thinking and change your life.

"I am a Surrendered Believer in Jesus Christ with Free Will and I CHOSE Surrender (Intelligent Delegation) in my victory over, “Recreational Chemical Abuse, my weekend, "False Idols."
"I chose DIRECT health assertive Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) instead of DISPLACED behavior in order to regain control over feeling helpless, powerless, trapped and lacking control. I changed my, "Thinking," and God changed my life."

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
