Dr. Ablow, a Psychiatrist said, "Robin Williams, a comic genius and one of the great storytellers of our time, apparently chose to end his life because he could not see the next chapter of his own story as containing anything other than unbearable psychological pain."
Suicide affected 17 - 20 million adults in the last year alone. Suicide is epidemic now. And our mental health care system is in ruins, so unable to respond that cities are spending tens of millions to build safety nets under their bridges to catch those who attempt to jump to their deaths. Is this how a forward society treats depression?
Ablow states, "Depression is the grand imposter -- posing as all powerful.  It can be defeated, every time, if you or the person you care about confronts it like the grand imposter that it is."

While I could be way off base, I have to wonder if a, "Shame fueled ideology," was a contributing factor to his suicide. I wonder the same with Seymour Hoffman. In a 2006 interview, Williams was quoted as saying, "There is no why." He was referencing the cause of his feelings. Do you really get to the cause in AA and 12 Steps? This was the, "go to therapy," for both of these human geniuses that gave so much to this society and left us with so little to understand. I hope the suicide of this great comedian will teach us all a lesson to be kinder to one another and know that every person is fighting his or her own battles. Love God and Love your neighbor. Luke 10:27

There is one thing I am sure of. Neither of these talented, unique individuals had a purpose driven life when they left.

While depression and suicidality is a mental condition, I would remind folks it is not unequivocally a “disease,” like cancer, that leaves choice out of the equation. Suicide is a choice that’s made of free will. Clients who feel suicidal and want to end their pain oftentimes have negative core beliefs about themselves that need changing.
Christ Recovery is scripturally designed to uncover the unresolved traumas or hidden truths that can fuel trapped feelings of helpless, hopeless and powerless.  There is nothing quite as potent as a focused life, one lived on purpose. Knowing your purpose simplifies your life. It defines what you do and what you don’t do. Your purpose becomes the standard you use to evaluate which activities are essential and which aren’t. You simply ask, “Does this activity help me fulfill one of God’s purposes for my life?” Without a clear purpose you have no foundation on which you base decisions, allocate your time, and use your resources. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Change your thinking and change your life. Romans 12:2

Robin Williams Did Not Die From Depression

Depression Alone Doesn't Kill

When over time and in an unrelenting way you feel utterly alone and feel that you and your life don't matter, death becomes you.

Robin Williams did not die from depression. There are tens to hundreds of millions of depressed people who do not commit suicide.

What he died from was des-pair (possibly the most life threatening part of depression).

And by des-pair I mean feeling utterly:

1. Hopeless - unpaired with a future that was worth living
2. Worthless - unpaired with any things you could do to take away some core feeling of worthlessness
3. Useless - unpaired with feeling you helped the world and/or unpaired with any lasting treatment that would take away your despair
4. Helpless - unpaired with feeling there was anything you could do to make yourself feel better in a lasting fashion
5. Meaningless - unpaired with feeling that anything you did mattered
6. Purposeless - unpaired with anything other than making other people laugh which wasn't enough
7. Pointless - unpaired with feeling there was any reason to go on given the above

There is one thing I am sure of. Robbin Williams did not have a purpose driven life when he left us.

Robin Williams’ death is, of course, tragic. How could someone who made so many laugh be the opposite inside? This is also a moment for us to reflect on what it can teach us. So with that, this process of uncovering the “truth” behind Williams’ death  may not be as important as uncovering our own truth. What is going in our own lives that can help us in a way that others weren’t able to help themselves? "You can accept your thoughts and feelings, be psychologically present, and connect with your values all you like, but without the commitment to take effective action, you won’t create a rich and meaningful life. Are you willing to accept your thoughts, feelings, and temptations? And can you begin to take effective actions that move you in the direction you want to go?

While I could be way off base, I have to wonder if a, "Shame fueled ideology," was a contributing factor to his suicide. I wonder the same with Seymour Hoffman. Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
