Are On-Demand Movies and TV Shows Stealing Your Life?

Yesterday, November 28, 2014, ‏‎5:21:57 PM | Susan Biali, M.D.

Do you get sucked into watching hours upon hours of online movies and television shows? Are you starting to feel uneasy about your habit, but love it too much to stop? Wake up to what you've been missing out on, and the sneaky but huge impact online entertainment is having on your life. Hit that "off" button and step back into the real world.  The providers of the endless entertainment aren't to blame here, though...it's our own human propensity to get addicted to things that offer sweet, numbing escape.

Escape is the operative word. Addictions are compulsive behaviors whether it be excessive TV watching, alcoholism, obsession with organizing your desktop, heroin addiction, you name it. Addictions are nothing more than symptoms of something else that is wrong. Understanding the etiology or cause is paramount. Life is full of adversity and situations we simply cannot control John 16:33. Addictions always serve an emotional purpose when you think about it. When circumstances in our lives cause us to feel helpless, trapped and out of control we often escape the trap, with compulsive behavior. Sometimes we are not even conscious of the way we are dealing with adversity. The obsessive TV watcher escapes the trap with the boob tube, the porn addict with porn, alcoholic with booze, etc. TV is certainly healthier than other displaced alternatives such as getting drunk but it is still a displaced behavior when carried to excess.

With Christ Recovery (personal relationship with Jesus Christ) we learn direct (not displaced) healthy Christ driven behavior by simply giving Christ control of our lives. This does not mean we have no control or free will. On the contrary, Christ returns that control to us in the form of direct healthy behavior.

From a scriptural perspective here is how it works:

Romans 12:2: We stop being conformed to this world of displaced thinking and transform our minds to direct healthy behavior-Christ Driven Behavior (CDB).

2 Corinthians 12-9-10: God's grace is sufficient for us when we surrender our control to Christ as there is new found power in weakness. In other words, we decide to delegate control to Christ. I prefer to call this, "Intelligent Delegation."

John 14:16:  Christ returns control to us through the Holy Spirit. Are we perfect? Of course not, we always have the tendency to do wrong, but we now know the difference between displaced behavior and direct healthy behavior. ( Reciprocal Innervation is when the, "Helper," returns control to us).

Galatians 5:22-23 : Now that we are transformed, surrendered and empowered, we can exhibit direct healthy behavior, the fruits of the Holy Spirit, not the least of which is self-control. (love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control).

These principles of cognitive behavior therapy are Christian behavior therapy. They are the marriage of science and scripture as taught by Jesus Christ over 2000 years ago.

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
