Addiction, People-Pleasing, Stress, and Neurology By Dorri Olds 02/17/17

MacDonald explained that the body can only be in one of two states: fight or flight or rest, digest, repair.

"It’s safe to say that all addicts and alcoholics have trouble with impulse control, hence the high relapse rate. But is there a way to train the brain to have stronger sway over compulsive urges? Dr. Don MacDonald, author of the bestseller, The Underdog Curse, says yes. “Dr. Don” (as his patients call him) is a chiropractor and spinal research advocate who has long been fascinated by neurology."

People go to a doctor because they can't control what is ailing them. Dealing with stress, psychological, physical and emotional is critical to healing. Teaching a patient how to control their lives, (taking control of circumstances in life that render them trapped, helpless, overwhelmed and out of control), has a huge reduction on somatic pain. Regaining control with direct healthy behavior and habits, based on values and purpose  is hard work but results in regaining control of their pain and more importantly their life! Eat well, move well, think well.

Addiction is a compulsive, substitute behavior intended to reverse a profound, intolerable sense of helplessness.
This helplessness is always rooted in something deeply important to the individual. Addictions are substitute (or displaced) actions. They take the place of a more direct response to feelings of helplessness in a particular situation. A DISPLACED Behavior is substitute behavior, always an emotional response to circumstances that cause us to feel overwhelmed and helpless, trapped, powerless and lacking control. This helplessness is always rooted in something deeply important to the individual. The inner engine of hurts, habits and hangups is consistent for each individual, namely an effort to relieve feelings of being trapped or helpless and to establish a sense of control. Addiction is a behavior intended to reverse this profound, intolerable sense of helplessness. Often, we attempt to regain control of our helpless, trapped feelings with compulsive Displaced Behavior! (Drinking, anger, drugs, sex, porn, controlling others, etc.).

Christ Driven Behavior that honors God is a form of direct healthy behavior used to regain control over helplessness and lack of control.

We can choose DIRECT Healthy Behavior when we give God control; when we decide to surrender aka intelligently delegate control to Christ, we become empowered! Yes, there is power in weakness! (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). Simply stated, we regain control over our adversity with the help of a built in mentor, the Holy Spirit (John 14:16) with empowered Direct behavior that, "Honors Christ." We conduct our lives with Christ Driven Behaviors (CDB) when get our values, motivation, purpose, behavior and self control from the Bible. (Galatians 5:22-23). When we change our thinking (repent or metanoia) we are not conformed to this world, but transformed by new thinking, when we let God change our life. (Romans 12:2)We can't always control our external circumstances, but we do have free will and we can change how we think about them and therefore change how we feel and behave. God wants our beliefs turned into behavior. Direct behavior is having the wisdom to think according to God’s perspective and the ability to respond or behave according to scriptural principles and values Christ Driven Behavior (CDB), is a direct behavior that honors God, a way to regain control over helpless feelings. When we surrender to God, He empowers us with a mentor, that imparts motivation, purpose and the fruits of the Holy Spirit called values. Self-control is one of those values!

Change your thinking and change your life.

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
