Addiction: Not a Brain Disease, Nor a DSM Diagnosis By Lance Dodes MD 05/22/13

"A leading psychiatrist examines the unprecedented rejection of his profession's new diagnostic system by the federal mental health research establishment. His conclusion? A plague on both their houses.
Addiction is neither a matter of what a substance does to a person (DSM) nor a matter of what a substance does to a brain (NIMH). Both views offer neat but inaccurate explanations for addiction’s true nature as a psychological process, akin to other compulsive behaviors, caused by meaningful emotional factors that must be explored and treated in psychotherapy. We do a disservice to our patients and make recovery less likely by locating addiction external to the person. "

"The proper way to treat addiction is to help people understand how this psychological compulsion operates, anticipate and manage the drive to repeat it, and work out the underlying issues that are being temporarily solved by this symptom."

"The idea that addiction is a “brain disease”—increasingly promoted by neuroscience—is hampering progress in treatment no less than the DSM’s diagnostic focus on the substance or behavior. While the label “disease” has helped to lessen the shame associated with addiction, it has given currency to the “chronic disease” model of addiction—a model that, in my view, has no validity."

The Occam's Razor test of addiction (unhealthy displaced compulsions) is the answer to these questions:
1. Does your hurt, habit or hangup, your drug of choice, separate you from your relationship with God?
2. Do you engage in displaced addictive behavior (drugs, alcohol, porn, anger, etc.) in order to attempt to regain control over your feeling helpless, trapped and powerless?
3. Are you making, "False idols," out of your behavior? (The psalmist asks, “How long will you love delusions and seek false gods?” (Psalm 4:2).

So what do you do about hurts, habits and hangups? Instead of displaced compulsive behavior you use a direct behavior, a Christ Driven Behavior. In the spirit of simplicity and truth, you reverse that control back to yourself, with a direct healthy behavior,  by giving God control! While that may appear an oxymoron on the surface, it is not. Let God control your thinking Romans 12:2 and He will return that control to you in the form of the Holy Spirit(John 14:16). When we regain control of our situation, issue, or life,  by giving God control (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),  we will find the grace and power to emulate the values, character and purpose of Jesus Christ. It doesn't get any simpler or better. Change your thinking and change your life! Christ Recovery is about discovering the root cause of your issues, understanding your emotionssurrendering or delegating control to God and changing your thinking. In other words understanding your symptoms (behavior/addiction/compulsions) from the INSIDE-OUT.  Addictions are symptoms, (not diseases), that are displaced behaviors intended to reverse feelings of profound helplessness and lack of control. Your circumstances may be out of your control, but God is in control of everything. Your thoughts shape who you are, but you can change the way you think. Change your thinking and change your life!

"I am a Surrendered Believer in Jesus Christ with Free Will and I CHOSE Surrender (Intelligent Delegation) in my victory over, “Recreational Chemical Abuse, my weekend, "False Idols."
"I chose DIRECT health assertive Christ Driven Behavior (CDB) instead of DISPLACED behavior in order to regain control over feeling helpless, powerless, trapped and lacking control. I changed my, "Thinking," and God changed my life."

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
