Addicted Brains
A neuroscientist examines life on drugs.
by Marc Lewis, Ph.D.

In this two part article, Dr. Lewis (an opioid addict for 3 decades) talks about why addicts have difficulty in quitting but how they can when they change their, "Thinking."

Dr. Lewis postulates two reasons:

1. Ego depletion from failed attempts to quit, which leads to lack of self trust.
2. Delayed Discounting or difficulty in being able to work for long term rewards. (addiction more of a problem than solution). Overvaluing immediate goals is the greatest impediment to trusting the future.

Below is my summary of his articles:

Ego depletion refers to our fundamental inability to maintain impulse control for a long period of time. Temptations are everywhere for the addict.(bar, dealer). Addicts have to control their impulses, not just for minutes, but for hours, day after day, week after week. So, they run out of capacity, and they give in. Ego depletion is accelerated when you don't believe in yourself, and that bowl of chocolate-chip cookies (read: booze, drugs, porn, or just too many cookies) is never far away.

The second phenomenon is delay discounting. Delay discounting (DD) is the tendency to devalue long-term rewards in favor of immediate rewards.  Which happens to be an unfortunate side effect of dopamine's impact on attention and motivation. Dopamine metabolism is the so-called common pathway to addiction. addicts are the worst-case scenario: the thought of a few lines of cocaine this afternoon or an evening at the casino is so attractive that it outweighs the far greater benefit of having some money in the bank tomorrow. The thought of a couple of drinks on the way home greatly outshines the attraction of a happy marriage in the coming week. A three-scoop sundae for a midday snack...well, you get the idea.

But addicts have an additional problem. They have a hard time seeing their future self as anyone but an addict. Stands to reason. If you've been an addict for years, or even decades, it's hard to imagine a future self who is clean, clear-headed, and in control.

Because it's so hard to trust their present or future self, addicts end up trusting the only thing they can trust: their drug, their drink, or the behavior that brings them temporary relief. That works for a while, but then they wake up, empty, broke, in even worse trouble, perhaps with withdrawal symptoms...and they have failed themselves yet again.

Self-trust is hard for addicts to find, but not impossible.  There's a self right there, right inside you, right now, that can take care of you...if you let it.
-------------

Celebrate Christ covers both points:  We are all sinners but when we give control to Christ our thinking is reborn, our behavior is born again. We learn to trust and surrender our lives to the values of Jesus Christ, God who becomes a very real part of us and we live for long term rewards. Secular addiction experts are promulgating the very virtues and philosophy detailed by Jesus Christ over 2013 years ago!

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
