A Proper Diet for Recovery

Eat well, move well and think well.

Americans often take their diets for granted, but proper nutrition can mean the difference between relapse and sobriety for recovering drug rehab patients. Clinical drug rehab addresses many of the mental and emotional concerns of addiction, but proper physical care is also important for maintaining sobriety. Unfortunately, most people – even those who claim to eat “healthy” – don’t understand the profound ways different foods can affect their bodies. For addicts to maintain the success of their drug rehab programs, they must learn long-term dietary strategies for improving their moods, bolstering their energy levels, and avoiding disease.

Don’t Diet

One of the worst things people do when attempting to eat healthier is to put themselves on short-term diets. Whether someone is trying to suppress drug cravings, lose weight, or feel better, a “diet” is not the solution. Instead, addicts should focus on making good nutrition an integral part of their daily lives.

Avoiding dietary extremes is especially important for people who have shown addictive behavior patterns. Severely restricting food choices can heighten people’s cravings for other substances – including drugs. People who complete drug rehab programs must practice moderation in all areas of life, and eating habits are no exception.

Colorful Foods for Health and Longevity

One of the best ways for addicts to avoid disease and stay healthy enough to fight cravings is to eat foods rich in vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and other essential micronutrients. However, eating the same fruits and vegetables every day is not enough. The body needs a large variety of nutrients which can only be obtained by eating a colorful variety of plant-based foods. Rehab patients should eat a diverse and ever-changing array of fresh produce, whole grains, and legumes.

Whole Grains for Good Moods

Carbohydrates can have an astounding impact on moods and energy levels. Most people eat far too much sugar and refined starch – substances which create dramatic fluctuations in blood sugar levels and lead to crashes, exhaustion, and irritableness. To stay positive and level-headed, addicts should avoid breads, pastas, and sweets in favor of whole grains. The complex carbohydrates in foods like oats and rice are conducive to sustained energy and even temperaments.

Boost Brain Function with Fish Oil

Research has shown time and again that Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for healthy hormone levels and proper brain functioning. A proper bodily chemical balance is crucial for avoiding stress-induced cravings, so addicts need to be sure to get plenty of these essential fats. However, they can be difficult to obtain from food alone. To ensure proper Omega-3 intake, drug rehab patients should supplement their diets with a quality fish oil supplement.

Focus on Flavor

Great nutrition doesn’t have to be bland or boring. Taking pleasure in food is essential for maintaining good eating habits in the long term, so addicts should make sure to enjoy the healthy foods they eat. A few basic cooking skills and a well-stocked spice rack can provide even the humblest of cooks with an infinite variety of delicious dishes.

Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span."  Exodus 23:25-26

Nutrition

Our Philosophy

Mitchell Fitness Systems, Inc.

There are literally 50,000 selections of books on the subject of "diet" on the market currently-with many to follow. The good news is that there're certain principles that always work. So, all we need to do is follow those principles! My book "How to Unlock the Five Doors to Your Best Body", list them (actions) as follows...

  1. Eat a minimum of 3 nutritious meals plus 1 snack (if needed) daily. This is in agreement with the "amount" and also the "type", and "timing" of food we consume.
  2. Eat foods in a variety of colors. This will help to ensure sufficient intake of vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber. This is in agreement to the "type" of food we consume.
  3. Drink lots of fresh water daily. Studies indicate that the lack of proper hydration inhibits proper weight management ability, along with many other health concerns.
  4. Eliminate foods that are slowly killing you. Sadly, American's eat about the most perverse and unhealthy food imaginable! All this prosperity, and we are literally killing us and our children in ignorance. Sorry, but it's true.
  5. Stop dieting. The first three letters should be a strong hint as to the effectiveness of quick fix, restrictive type dieting systems.

Simple Daily Habits

Science based habits that produce healthy weight loss

  1. Find out how many calories you currently average on a daily bases, and begin to decrease those calories 300-500/day.
  2. Increase exercise. Enough said.
  3. Decrease sugar. From white sugar, to crackers, to pasta, you name it, decrease the amount you eat...its sugar! A calorie is NOT just a calorie!
  4. Increase protein. If you are a women, this is a must! Men tend to get sufficient amounts of protein.
  5. Increase veggies. Yep, mom was right!
  6. Decrease grains. Our government though it was a good idea many years ago, but it's only produced a nation that is overweight and undernourished.
  7. Replace unhealthy fats with healthy fats. Less vegetable oils and more omega 3 oils!
That's the "A" list of what REALLY works! You won't find your health in a bottle of pills. You'll only find it in a daily pattern of habits per the above list.

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
