A New Sobriety

Why Alcohol Moderation Programs Are Urgently Needed

Published on August 22, 2014 by Adi Jaffe, Ph.D. in All About Addiction

By Adi Jaffe and Marc Kern

You might know someone who drinks alcohol. You might even be one of those drinkers; and you might be at risk.

Take this in:
•Excessive alcohol use is the 4th leading preventable cause of death in the United States (CDC Press Release).

AND
•1 in 10 deaths among adults is due to excessive alcohol consumption (CDC Press Release).

Scary stuff right?

All change ultimately occurs because of decisions (Thinking) people make for themselves.
People change when they HURT enough and have to or when they LEARN enough and want to.
A person's purpose and values are the main navigational tools in recovery and in life.
People overcome hurts, habits and hang ups out of purpose-based motivation -- they better themselves when they recognize how their habits, violate who they were, what they want to be, where they want to go in life.
Individuals are far more likely to enter and succeed in a treatment of their choice (as compared to avoiding any treatment). People change when they decide to change. When they are motivated to change.

Science shows that to get heavy drinkers to really evaluate their drinking and decide to quit for themselves is to offer moderation as a goal. Moderation is often a path to control and abstinence if needed. Christ never preached abstinence, Christ preached control, values and purpose.
People need to feel that they have personally concluded that abstinence is their only option.  They need to be vested in their sobriety.
The best way to be vested in your sobriety is when we make Christ the Chief Operation Officer in our lives, when we Delegate Control or Surrender to Christ, He returns that control to us, the Chief Executive Officer, that has Free Will and Choice. Fortunately we are promised a, "Helper." The Holy Spirit facilitates such values as, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, self-control.

Do Moderation Programs Encourage Alcoholic Drinking?

Our view of recovery is distorted and leads to gaps in treatment offerings.

Published on September 15, 2014 by Adi Jaffe, Ph.D. in All About Addiction

"The truth is that many people who have been successfully abstinent are very satisfied with their new life and are not at all interested in reintroducing alcohol into their lives. This is barely the issue at all. Instead, the problem is that most people who struggle with substance use (90% to be exact) never even enter treatment. And research suggests that introducing non-abstinence options would open up treatment to millions more! We are dealing with approximately 1% of substance use problems being successfully handled now - The goal is to introduce treatment option that increase the reach of treatment and abstinence-only approaches are simply not doing it. The Center for Substance Abuse Research found that 40% of individuals who did not enter treatment cited “Not ready to stop using” as a major reason."
"The Center for Substance Abuse Research found that 40% of individuals who did not enter treatment cited “Not ready to stop using” as a major reason. My own UCLA and NIDA research (Jaffe, 2013) supports that finding in a group on people seeking treatment online. All of this suggests that rather than serving as an excuse, offering non-abstinence methods is a necessary step to open up solutions for the tens-of-millions of Americans struggling with substance use problems. Their struggles with depression, anxiety and other co-occurring conditions (Jaffe, 2007) will be considerably eased if we stop sticking to outdated dogma that simply isn’t enough."

Science shows that to get heavy drinkers to really evaluate their drinking and decide to quit for themselves is to offer moderation as a goal. Moderation is often a path to control and abstinence if needed. Christ never preached abstinence, Christ preached control, values and purpose.
The real question with respect to any altered state of mind is: How can I best serve my relationship, my purpose with Christ?
Do I use my habit or hangup to escape circumstances and issues in life that cause me to feel helpless, trapped and out of control? In other words, does my habit cause me to attempt to regain control of an overwhelming circumstance with a displaced-substitute behavior or a healthy direct Christ Driven Behavior?

Pray about it. Change your thinking and change your life.

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17.

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
