In Praise of Neurogenesis

A little sweat pays big dividends in recovery.

"Scientists have long known that activities like learning, socialization and physical activity—key components of “environmental enrichment”—lead to the growth and development of nerve tissue that will become new brain cells, a process called neurogenesis. Such enrichment can include all manner of stimuli, but a group of researchers at the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) wanted to find out exactly how much of that neurogenic stimulus is due solely to exercise."

"As a treatment modality for drug and alcohol addiction, physical exercise is often effective, quite well studied—and free. It is the most boring, the most mundane, the most predictable exhortation of them all—or perhaps the second most predictable, after the admonition to Eat Less. "

Brain plasticity says that new neuron-pathways can be made way beyond the predetermined age brain maturity. Past beliefs that once our brain has set up or matured that it cannot be changed; or the brain cannot restructure itself has been proven false by many brain neurosurgeons and other scientist who study brain function and brain regeneration. Such studies by Dr. Amen as an example are a good place to look into brain plasticity.

Indeed, when I was a neurophysiology major in college, the prominent premise was that the brain once damaged, could not repair itself. Neuroscience has since shown that this is not true. Though individual neurons might be damaged beyond repair, the brain attempts to heal itself when damaged by making new collateral connections or new neural pathway (engrams) as work-arounds for the damage. This is called neuroplasticity, neuro (brain/nerve/neuron) and plasticity (moldability).

What does neuroplasticity have to do with addiction treatment?

When we develop a habit, the brain creates a neural path (engram) in support of that habit. As we engage in the habit over and over again, the pathway becomes well-worn or stronger. This is similar to lifting a weight. If you lift a weight over and over, the muscle will get stronger. Neuro-physiologically, addiction can be explained as a neuroplastic event. The brain gets trained to perform a particular behavior use drugs, porn, gambling eventually to the exclusion of all else. Essentially, in addiction, the pleasure centers of the brain are dominated by the addiction. Eventually, it is only the addictive behavior that brings the addict control or any sense of joy, or at least freedom from pain. This is not only a biochemical process; drugs themselves affect the brain’s biochemistry, but also a process of habit, a displaced or substitute behavior called addiction. The addict’s brain becomes accustomed to the displaced addictive act being the source of pleasure or control instead of direct healthy pleasure with family, friends, a good meal, a job well done, healthy values and especially a higher purpose (God). We can retrain the brain and we can rebalance the addict’s biochemistry and behavior.

From a behavioral perspective, it all starts with emotional stress. Something very important to the individual, that makes them feel helpless and trapped. When the person chooses to attempt to regain control of an issue or circumstance (hurt, habit or hangup) that has rendered them overwhelmed, helpless and trapped with a resultant displaced unhealthy compulsive behavior (drugs, anger, porn, etc.). With proper treatment, we can retrain the brain, that is develop a new pathway that supports healthy direct thinking, control and recovery. With secular psychotherapy, CRAFT, SMART, Cognitive Behavior Therapy and other interventions, we strengthen the new "healthy recovery" loop within the brain. The brain then learns to enjoy recovery, those things that give us pleasure in our sober lives family, work, exercise, sports, interpersonal interactions.

When we have a relationship with Jesus Christ we learn Building and Maintaining Motivation, Coping with Urges, Managing Thoughts, Feelings and Behaviors, Living a Balanced Life.  When we retrain our brain with direct Christ Driven Behavior, (CDB) we learn to change our thinking (neural engrams), our motivation, values our purpose and that changes our character and lives. Romans 12:2. Most addiction experts perceive that Science and Scripture are antithetical; they are wrong. Jesus Christ taught this basic psychotherapy over 2000 years ago. In fact He authored a Book on it. Read it to be wise, believe it to be saved and practice it to be holy and healthy.

Quick Navigation:

There is no reason why anyone with any hurt, habit, or hang up cannot be helped. The Person-God partnership simply needs to be more powerful than any hurt, habit or hangup.

Behind everything you do is a THOUGHT.

Every BEHAVIOR is motivated by a BELIEF.

Every ACTION is prompted by an ATTITUDE.

-----------------------------------------------------------

With respect to behavior, life is about, emotions, beliefs, thinking and control.

"A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."Proverbs 29:11 (Displaced Behaviors)

"Do not be conformed by this world but instead by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2 (Direct Behavior)

When you think and empower yourself and surrender control to God, when you Intelligently Delegate Control to God (2 Corinthians 12:9-10),

God returns that control to you with a, “Helper," the Holy Spirit, (John 14:16) a form of Reciprocal Innervation.

You regain control: "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

No longer are you subject to corrupted displaced thinking but instead are transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2).

This is where science and scripture intertwine, where Christ Driven Behavior brings, values, control, cause, character and purpose driven behavior, the fruits of the spirit Galatians 5:22-23 .

------------------------------------------------------------

Proverbs 29:11 "A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back."

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2 Corinthians 12-9:“My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

John 14:16: "He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—"

Philippians 2:13: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."

Galatians 5:22-23 "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Ephesians 4:22-23 "...put away the old person you used to be. Have nothing to do with your old sinful life. It was sinful because of being fooled into following bad desires. Let your minds and hearts be made new."

Life is about finding Purpose. When you have a, "Global Purpose," in life, healthy direct assertive thinking and behavior follow.

Change your thinking, change your life!
